Report: Climate Crisis and Environmental Sustainability in India’s Tier 2 Cities

Over the past few months, we published a series of articles examining the growing environmental challenges in India’s Tier 2 towns—Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Shimla, Varanasi, and Rishikesh. These stories painted a dim picture, backed by data and expert insight, pointing to a common set of issues: unplanned urbanisation, unchecked emissions, and inadequate waste and water management.

To deepen the conversation, we hosted a round table with journalists, environmental experts, writers, and engaged citizens from these towns. The discussion explored the root causes of urban environmental degradation, shared lived experiences, highlighted grassroots efforts, and identified actionable solutions for local communities.
