The Why and How of Bengaluru’s Biodiversity was a joint project with Mongabay environmental conservation portal, made possible with support from Bengaluru Sustainability Forum. The goal was to spotlight the rich yet often overlooked biodiversity of Bengaluru. This initiative aimed to bring attention to the ecological dynamics of the city through a range of public engagement efforts.
As part of the project, we published a series of stories for the public, organized workshops for journalists, created resource kits, and hosted interactive events to involve young people in environmental conversations. Key outcomes of this project included the development of two practical guidebooks to support capacity building and a set of articles on Bengaluru’s ecosystems and biodiversity published on Citizen Matters.
- Articles that explored impact of artificial light, future of Lesser Florican and Slender Loris, lost crop varieties and state of regulatory body
- Multimedia stories – Secret life of solitary bees and Lakes, livelihoods, and biodiversity
- Biodiversity and mega real estate projects: Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3
- A to Z guide of Bengaluru’s lakes – an illustrated guide
- Bengaluru Biodiversity Charche, a day-long event on all things biodiversity
- A guide for journalists covering urban environmental issues, aimed at enhancing environmental journalism in the city

- A toolkit for scientists, sharing best practices for effective communication and collaboration with civil society and the media.

This multi-pronged approach was designed to bridge gaps between science, media, and the public—fostering a more informed and engaged community around urban biodiversity.
